Comments on Mass Poisoning in Wuyi

 Dear guys,

Recently, Wuyi campus has  been dipped  into the tension of mass poisoning. The root of the accidents is the irresponsibility of the school canteen. Their carelessly dealing with the dishes put the students’ lives in to danger. More than 500 students have been affected by the unhealthy/poisonous dishes, which are cooked by the namely new canteen. And we all believe that it’s all because the canteen get in some vegetables which still have pesticide stick on.

Holy cow!

I don’t quite understand why the school authority lets the canteen keep operating even the mass poisoning happens. Both of them are not responsible. Until now, they do nothing. How come? Is that because the profit they are pursuing is much more important than our health and lives? We students need an answer!

Some of the students can’t stand it any more. They make some excessive comments and upload it onto the internet. I guess most of the students have known about this matter and read the remarks. And some of them have do some reply to show their back up.The problems figured out are mostly true. But as a fellow in Wuyi University, I think they should be more considerable.

What they do will possibly destroy the reputation of the university.  Look! It’s the mistake that is made by the canteen. As a college student, at least he/she should think in a logical and objective way to analyze the whole issue.  We hope the school doesn’t take us for granted. We are not for sale.  But above all, we should act like a wise man.

I just hope this kind of mistake won’t happen again. That’s no laughing matter!

A New Semester

It is nice to be back from a year away from teaching. In a way, I do feel renewed from an intellectual perspective, but the best part of being back at work is being with friends and people I relate to as fellow-teachers. It is missing from my life last year so I tend to appreciate it a great deal more at this point.

I am meeting new students and perhaps some new faces will become part of life all the way from China once again. My world of friends always expands and that is such a wonderful part of life.

If you are new to the blog world of Wuyi – please leave a comment to this or enter your own blog entry. Email me and I will provide the right key words to enter.

Online Learning

It occurs to me that when teaching online there are several dynamics that occur that do not occur to be as much of a factor when teaching a traditional class in a classroom. The dependency upon technology is clearly important in both settings but more so online where it is the medium of delivery. The differential ability of students to work with computers is a huge factor and an instructor has to remember there may be minimal skill levels contrasted with very high ones. Some students have more experience with computers than others do in other words. Some have access to better machines and higher connection speeds. Some students may even have to find someone else’s computer or a computer in a library to take the online course. Some have it all at home or in their dorm room. So all of this differential access and ability make teaching online more difficult. This is not to say that a teacher may possess that same level of divergence and be far behind his or her students when teaching online. This is a product of today’s world and one that must be underscored in online teaching.

Learning At A Distance

I have to share that for the first three weeks there have been ups and downs with the class, but the things that we have been able to do despite the technology glitches are encouraging. It is frustrating to have the speed cut down on how we communicate but we are trying to communicate half-way around the world and that is a factor that we need to recognize. It is interesting to use both breeze and skype simultaneously to be able to communicate somewhat. The loss of breeze this last week was difficult because it has some nice features that enable us to share so much more. The ability to upload power point demonstrations and convert them to flash presentations for easy delivery is a wonderful feature. The ability to switch to the white board is so important as ideas get generated. The chat feature is a good way to share private and general communication above the other features – or should I say below the other features. However, without breeze there are alternatives but not nearly as suitable.

I have to share that learning is something that I define as our own endeavor to seek to improve our understanding of the world and our own skills. Writing is a skill. It is something that helps us communicate. It is something that can be directed by someone else who we think of as a teacher but it always comes down to what we do on our own. Learning is not about test taking but applying ideas to see if they work – to see if they help us improve understanding or skills. All learning, therefore, is about what we put into the process of trying to learn.

If we dwell on the difficulties of the internet connection and not on writing, then we will have lost something – an opportunity to learn about writing. Focus on what we are trying to do and keep trying to learn some new skills that will help your writing. That is the real goal ahead of us no matter what happens with the technology.

Ask yourself one question. Ask – do I learn much if someone else corrects my writing? I would argue you do not. I will correct along the way but the more you learn to correct yourself the better you will be in the future. When you have a job – who will correct your grammar or your spelling or the way you phrased something? The answer is no one will do that for you. You need to learn how to do this yourself. So read things backwards and use peer review and try to work out the problem of how to write better by using yourself.

As a teacher I believe I should push you to do more to learn how to learn. That is my goal with you just as it is with my Buried Cities and Lost Tribes and Bones, Stones and Human Evolution students. I want you to push yourself to learn but you have to learn how to learn first. That means taking responsibility for things and not waiting for a teacher to always be there to help you. Fortunately you have someone around to help you now but that will not always be the case. Particularly when it comes to writing, you may one day have to write something for your job and you will want it done well – you will rely on yourself at that point.

a walking fatman

I read a piece of news about a American fatman who is walking from the west to the east coast for losing weight. I`m moved by his couragement and his persistence. Being a fat girl, I have never thougt of doing such thing to lose my weight. What I often do is to complain why I am so fat and not beautiful. But now, Steve, the fatman, is setting a good example for me. Although I won`t do such a big project like him, I will keep losing weight by playing tennis and controlling my diets. I believe I will succeed one day for my persistence.

Hope you guys can stick on your aims, being persistent. Persistence is a key to the success.

This is the website for Steve: www.thefatmanwalking.com

I think it’s a  very good poem so  I want to share it with you all ! :)                 Jessica

Begin Again

One of the best things we can do in our lives is this:

Begin again.

Begin to see your-self as you were

When you were the happiest and strongest you’ve ever been

Begin to remember what worked for you

(and what worked against you),

And try to capture the magic again.

Begin to remember how natural it was when you were a child-

To live a lifetime each day.

Begin to forget the baggage you have carried with you

For years:

The problems that don’t matter anymore,

The tears that cried themselves away,

And the worries that are going to wash away

On the shore of tomorrow’s new beginnings.

Tomorrow tells us it will be here every new day of our lives;

And if we will be wise ,

We will turn away from the problems of the past

And give the future – and ourselves – a chance

To become the best of friends.

Sometimes all it takes is a wish in the heart to let yourself …

Begin again.

The Watch Towers in Kaiping

The Watch Towers, a special kind of building standing in a beautiful city, Kaiping, are famous for its history background and the special appearance.
The Watch Towers are the witness of the history of Kaiping. They were firstly built in Qing Dynasty, when Kaiping was also firstly set up, for those unarmed to avoid the caterans at that time. Then, more Watch Towers were built in World War II, not only for the unarmed to hide, but also for the soldiers to protest the villages and fight with the Japanese. Nowadays, you can see many bullet holes on the old, yellow walls. “We will never reprinted them, they are evidence of the Kaiping people’s history and braveness.” A local officer said.
Besides, the Watch Towers are very different from the common houses. They are much higher, and much more solid built. Since most of them were donated and designed by the oversea Chinese, the styles are very special. They are the combination of western countries and China, beautiful and useful. Even now, they are still the bright view sights in Kaiping.
The Watch Towers in Kaiping just like the old ladies, from whom you can still find their beauty in the old days, have many stories to tell.

Why do we go to the Univerisity

Why do we go to university? In my opinion, we go to university mainly for our parents, a better job and knowledge.
Firstly, we go to university for our parents. Although it seems ridiculous, it does happen like that. When we were in the middle school, we could be described as passive, childish and blind. The only thing we knew was that if we did a good job on study, our parents would be very happy. In their opinions, university was a test that whether we did it well or not. Therefore, our parents were very concerned about our university. They read lots of universities’ introductions, collected information on universities, and paid attention to all latest policies about the exams. We really did not want to disappoint them, and then we studied much harder so that we could be rolled by a better university. In some way, we do go to university for our parents.
Secondly, we go to university for a better job. A better job means high pay, or we can say much more money. In other word, we go to university for future money. Some students are shame to say it like that. However, money it not an evil thing, so we don’t need to hold this kind of feeling. As a matter of fact, we have to take the job into consideration. Nowadays, the competition is much stronger, especially in China such a large popularity country. Higher education means higher rate for a better job. Higher pay could help us lots of things, such as supporting our parents, living a easier life and raising our future children. Therefore, a better job is a realistic purpose for our going to university.
Thirdly, we go to university for knowledge. It is the last one but not the least one. If say the two reasons concerned above are for others, the last one is for our own. Life sometimes is passive. We can only do other things after we are satisfied. Life can be active if we are the master of our own. And the weapon is knowledge that can kick out of our confusion. In the university, there are many different kinds of subjects to enrich our knowledge. By this means, we can learn that what is relativity, how the market works, why we live and so on. The more we learn, the more flexibly we adjust to the changing environments. What’s more, we can learn the skills of learning. It is amazing. What we learn in the university is limited. What we should do is to summarize the ways of learning which will be useful for our social knowledge learning.
Anyway, now we are in the university. We have done it quite well for our parents, and we are doing for a better job. What about our knowledge? I think it is never too late to do that.
